Miserable Ending, and a lesson to Humans.

“If you can’t change it, change your attitude,” said Maya Angelou.

This quote has likeness between today’s topic.

(This is a real story based on my friend Sumin )

One day, there once lived a kid called Lee Sumin. Her dad had to go to Vietnam for work, and she, her older and younger brother was in Korea. Her dad went to Vietnam faster than the others did.

Sumin was supposed to go to Vietnam when Summer break started, but because of severe Covid-19 issues, she could not. But now, she said she will finally go there on January 4th. She will be back in Korea when she is 15 years old. Her friends were all sad about her since she was a nice friend.

There is a similar Korean book about this situation called The Thirteenth Kid.

I had to read this book again because we were doing a debate based on this book. And guess what? The topic was Should we treat Artificial Intelligence robots as humans?

It was a similar topic from our discussion with Cinder, and I chose team Government.

Anyways, the book is really fun but sad at the end.

Summary:

A human boy called Siwoo Jang gets made up as a kid which parents have chosen. His personality, his outside features are all that his mom has chosen. He is the thirteenth kid that has been made like that.

There is an AI called Leo. He came in by Siwoo’s mom bringing him (buying him). On the day when people throw away robots, he brought his Goldfish robots, pet dog robot, his younger sister robot, Sia, and more and more of the robots, and just threw them away.

But as it goes through the story, people began to realize that robots that can feel emotions exactly like humans can rule over the Earth. And the government from this story sends police officers, which are mostly robots to kill all of the robots that can feel lots of emotion. Min Ki Hyun scientist, who made Siwoo, decides that he will stop making kids that parents want; he believes in humanity and human dignity. Therefore he helps other robots and Leo to escape to an underground tunnel.

However, almost a second before the police find out their refuge, Leo says,

“I don’t want to get dragged away by people who hate me. I just want to die quietly and peacefully. Please Siwoo, turn my power off and remove my emotion chip.”

Therefore Siwoo, which at first believed that robots are things that have to follow people’s orders, (even emotional ones like Leo) began to mope for the missing of Leo.

To summarize, Leo dies and Siwoo is sad about that. People think that robots can control humans. And additionally, Kim Sun, who is The first Kid, decides to kill himself.

Also, a fact that brings misery:

Leo’s name is made up by Leonardo Davinci, to become good at art-related things, but unfortunately, robots can’t do art-related activities in this world.

Quote from the book:

“What is the difference between a made-up human and a made-up robot?”- Leo
