Hi guys, this is my summary on the book Chains. The author's name is Laurie Halse Anderson, and, the title is kind of short, but I think that it's interesting. If you look on the front cover, the cover shows an African American girl with chains on her wrists, and two eagles are flying around; one with a British flag (yay! King George), and one with an American flag. When I first saw the cover, I didn't know what this meant, (what can two birds flying around a chained girl mean?) but, as I read on, I understood what this cover meant.
This book is about a young girl who is a slave, living in the time of the British-American war. So, this part explains the chains, which I think represents slavery, and the two birds, the British and the American. More about the birds; the birds seem to be kind of in a rivalry to win the girl's attention. This explains the later part when the girl has to decide whether to spy for the rebels and be able to escape or risk siding for the British and earning freedom. Actually, she doesn't get to choose, the British takes over the town and she finds out that the British only frees slaves from American owners, but her owner is British. So, she later escapes with her brother Cuzon who is held prisoner at the British cell.
Now, I'll explain again from the beginning of the story. This young girl's name is Isabel and she has a little sister called Ruth, and their owner dies and they are shipped off as slaves. They get sent to a British family and the owner of the house, Madam is very aggressive towards their slaves. Cuzon, who was asked to lead the girls towards the house, leads the girls to the house where they are supposed to work in, and as they head towards the house Cuzon tells Isabel to try and spy on the British family. Coincidentally, the house that Isabel works in happens to host British generals every week or so, and Isabel gets to spy on them. This isn't the end of the book, but more than this, I feel would be too much. There actually are two more books connecting to this book called Forge, and Ashes. I think that they should also be fun.
