El Deafo

Yesterday, I finally finished this book called El Deafo. It is about this little girl named Cece who is 4 years old. One day, she gets a terrible accident and the doctor says her brain might swell. After a while, she start to have problems hearing, and afterwards, she can't hear without a hearing aid. She is ashamed about her hearing aid and thinks everybody is watching everywhere she goes. Even though she can't hear well, she likes to watch TV. Before she start to go to school, her mom gets her this new, more powerful hearing aid. When she starts to go to school, she start thinking that this is kind of like a superpower that nobody knows except her. She can hear her teacher anywhere she is inside the school. She can't hide that she is lonely though. It's like she is in her own bubble. But not long after, a girl named Laura asks her if she wants some fritos. Cece becomes best friends with Laura. Even though Laura doesn't care about Cece's hearing aids, she is a pushy friend. One day, she suggests they do the dining game while they're having a sleepover at Laura's house. While they're playing the dining game, which Cece and Laura's sister just walk around the dining table, Laura makes her dog bite Cece. They are in the same class until the first day of third grade. Cece start to feel lonely again until a girl named Ginny joins her class. They become good friends, and Cece even gets invited to Ginny's birthday party. Before she goes to Ginny's birthday party, she watches a TV show with her older siblings. When a girl with a hearing aid comes on the TV show, Cece wants to know what the other girl said to the girl with the hearing aid. Her older brother hesitates, and her sister tells her that the girl said to the other girl, that she is deafo. Cece doesn't know why, and she knows that she is not supposed to laugh at this, but she does. She starts to call herself El Deafo. In Ginny's birthday party, Ginny turns the light off while everybody is still talking. Cece thinks it's because Ginny doesn't like her. So when summer vacation starts, Cece doesn't play with Ginny, but instead finds a new playmate, Martha. They spend the whole summer together. But an unfortunate accident happens. They were playing tag and Cece gets her eye poked with a branch. After that Martha stays away from Cece. This book is about Cece who is deaf . You can learn that everybody is special in their own way, even if lots of other people think you're not.
