Great Expectations
This book is about a boy called Pip who used to be poor, but suddenly became rich by the help of a person who didn’t want Pip to know who helped Pip.
Pip lives with Joe, who is a blacksmith, and his sister. One day, he was at his parents’ grave when he faces a person who escaped from jail which threatened Pip and made Pip get some food and a knife that cuts metal. Eventually the prisoner gets caught, but thankfully the prisoner said that he had stolen those things, so no one suspected Pip. Then, Pip gets to go to Miss Havisham’s house to go and play.
Unfortunately, Miss Havisham is filled with revenge for men, and she raised a child, Estella who isn’t hers in order to use her for the revenge. Miss Havisham knew that boys would fall in love with her and liked the thought of boys breaking up and being hurt in their hearts. The thing was that Pip also fell in love with Estella, and someone had given him a great amount of expectations, so Pip thought that Miss Havisham gave it and wanted Pip to marry Estella, but soon, he gets to know that the prisoner which he had helped when he was young had given him the expectations. He was very disappointed, and when Estella declares that she is going to marry another boy, Pip feels despaired. The prisoner who gave Pip the expectations dies in prison, while Pip hears from his friend that the prisoner was Estella’s real father. After all these things were over, he regretted what he did and went to Egypt. 11years passed, and Pip meets Estella again in Miss Havisham’s house. After Estella had married with another boy, she was beaten up and lived a hard life, which made her kind and soft.
I think this book tells us that we must suffer in order to become a better person and a better me. I also think it was cruel to hurt other boys’ harts using Estella, even though Miss Havisham’s heart was hurt so much because it just happened to be a boy who hurt Miss Havisham’s heart, and it’s not the boys’ fault that they are boys.
