Hatchet

By. Jasmine Hong

Brian Robeson is a 13 year-old boy, whose parents are divorced. He was on his way to visit his father when the plane which he is flying crashes. Brian got left alone in Canadian wilderness, and he only had a hatchet his mother gave him as a present.

Brian woke up to find himself sprawled on the sand. He built a small shelter, and decided to find some food, but all Brian could find were wild berries. Brian tried many things, and also suffered a lot. He got attacked by a Porcupine, many planes passed by without noticing him, but somehow, he built a fire, found turtle eggs to eat, and caught fish with an arrow he made. Then, Brian came up with a new thought. He had seen emergency food in the plane, which he thought he could eat. Unfortunately, the plane had drowned, so he had to dive several times in order to get the food.

When Brian was preparing the food he had found in the plane, a plane landed near the lake where he was living. Brian was finally RESCUED!!

It was really amazing that Brian lived in the wilderness all by himself for 54 days. I have read many survival books, but the characters had some useful things, and on the other hand, this book’s character, Brian only had a hatchet he got as a present. In order to be like this, Brian had to try hard and used a long time. I think Brian is very patient and talented, and this book is the best survival book of all.
