I can speak

Writer's picture: SophieSophie

On Chuseok, I watched a movie called 'I can speak'. It is about a grandmother called 'Na Ok Boon' who learns English to speak in the court against Japan. She is called nosy because she intervenes a lot. Na Ok Boon learned English in an academy with students, but she gets kicked out because she can't listen well and the academy thought that it was affecting the students. However, the day she got kicked out, she heard, well, eavesdropped on a conversation. A straight-A student was talking to the professor. Na Ok Boon begged to the student to teach her English. At first, he did not accept the offer, but he did at last, and he became very close with Ok Boon. Then, one day, Na Ok Boon's chance came. Anyone who were one of the 'We An Bu' members could go to the court and speak about her feelings about Japan and the things they did wrong. However, the court said there is no proof that she were part of the We An Bu. So, Na Ok Boon showed her belly to everyone. On her belly, there were lots of wounds and cuts from the mistreatment the Japanese gave. So, she proved that she was one of the We An Bu and she sucessfully presented her speech. After her speech, she became a star. I thought that this movie shows that even grandmothers can speak and learn English. I wish many of the old were like Na Ok Boon and stands up for herself. Thank you.
