Hi! This is Jason and today I will be writing about an awesome book I read called Iron Thunder. This book is about a 13 year old boy in the 1860s’ who finds himself building the world’s first iron ship because his family needs money. The reason that his family needs money is because recently, Tom (the main character)’s dad died while fighting in the civil war. However, when Tom first started working for the inventor who made the first iron ship, Captain Ecricsson, he is not very proud of his job because the people all around him are mocking him and telling him that Captain Ecricsson is a madman with some crazy idea to build an iron ship. However, as Tom works with the Captain, he soon realizes that the others are wrong and Captain Ecricsson is a genius not a madman. Eventually, the day that the iron ship has to be launched comes and the Monitor (the iron ship) is launched successfully. The Monitor fights the other side’s iron ship (the merribermack) but no one wins. Eventually the story ends kind of sadly with the Monitor sinking because of a storm although Tom survives.
I think that the most interesting part in this story is when Tom first meets a spy from the other side who bribes him with money for information about the monitor. Tom knows that Captain Ecricsson told him to keep quiet so he does not tell the spy about the monitor. The part I liked about this is how creative the spy got and how Tom fought back. When the spy realizes that Tom will probably not tell him anything and he is wasting his money, he gets his “friends” to kidnap Tom. It would have worked except for the fact that Tom’s friends had called the police. All in all, I think that this is a very great book that I would definitely recommend you to read.
