Recently I read a book called The Red and the Black. In French it is called Le Rouge et le Noir. It is written by Stendhal in 1830. The book shows protagonist Julien Sorel’s psychological growths as he becomes an adult. He daydreamed about Napoleon’s wonderful adventures even though he knew that serving Napoleon will not give him anything. He is recommended to tutor the children of Monsieur de Rênal, who is the mayor of Verrières. He begins love with Monsieur de Rênal's wife, and also with her chambermaid Elisa gets in love with Julien. Elisa makes it known to the whole village. But, not long after, Julien gets recommended as a private secretary to the diplomat Marquis de la Mole, a Catholic legitimist. After, Julien Sorel lives in Paris as an employee of the de la Mole family. Meanwhile, the Marquis's languorous daughter, Mathilde de la Mole, has become emotionally torn between her romantic attraction to Julien because even though she knew that Julien was from a very poor family with no power. But they still fall love and Matilda gets Julien’s baby. Monsieur de Rênal's wife who heard the news gets very angry. Julien tries to kill Monsieur de Rênal's wife but failed and he gets into jail and dies. Matilda still stays next to him and cries for him.
When I first read this book, it just made me confusing. It was hard to understand everyone’s psychological thoughts and think about. It make me think about how Julien Sorel’s mind has grown from the first part of the story where he was still young and immature to the last part of the story after he goes through all the problems and has grown outside and the inside. I think Julien Sorel’s mind has grown to think about what other people will think. First, he only thought about himself. Everything was just a formal thing to get what he wanted. But at the last part of the story, he sincerely got in love and got mature. This book made me think how many people’s minds grow.
