The idea of social media seems pretty great and revolutionary; a online place where people can make friends, and hear other people’s perspectives about issues. However, I think that the reality of social media isn’t exactly the same as this, for example, take a look at the incident where facebook user’s personal information was leaked. That certainly wasn’t in the idea of social media. And as I’m going to explain, I think that social media does more harm than good.
Misused information
I think that first of all, misused information takes a big role on why I think that social media does more harm than good. When people use social media, they give the companies of the social media, information about themselves, and even the smallest pieces of information that users give out can be kept recorded, and later when the records have grown in number, the information about users can be used badly. For example, to maybe influence your thoughts about a politician, etc. Also, the data could be leaked, like what happened to the data of thousands of facebook users.
Wrong, bad, or misleading information
Also, there is tons of fake, inappropriate, and misleading information on most social media sites. For example, wrong accusations about some people, or a country could be a problem, as tons of people might see the post and actually believe it. And, probably by the time that the social media application has deleted the post, tons of people would have seen that misleading information, and told it to their friends, family members, etc. There is also the problem of bullying. Since people tend to be more careless about what they say to people on the screen, then in real life, this leads to a lot of bullying on social media. Malicious comments, false rumors, etc are all part of the problem. Believe it or not actually, many famous people have suicided, because of so many people writing malicious and mean things carelessly on their posts.
Addiction
Lastly, many studies have shown that the extensive use of social media can actually cause addiction to the users. Throughout their day, they feel to post something on their pages or check others posts as it has become an important part of our life. And with these harms, being addicted to social media isn’t very good.
However, this is only the dark side of social media. Like the harms of social media, there are tons of benefits about social media. Still, I think that people shouldn’t risk so much harms like these to gain the benefits of social media, and I also think that social media does more harm than good.
