The Black Pearl
By. Jasmine Hong
I started to get more interested in this book since I learned and wrote paragraphs about it.
Long ago, Ramon and his friends had been told stories of a monster, which they called the Manta Diablo, but because their mothers told different stories about it, he didn’t believe it - until now.
Ramon asked Soto Luzon, an Indian pearl seller to teach him how to dive for pearls. He learned many things and also, that the Manta Diablo lives in the lagoon which Luzon always dived for pearls. One day, Ramon decided to dive for pearls near the cave which the Manta Diablo lives in. He found the Pearl of Heaven at the mouth of the cave!! Unfortunately, Soto Luzon warned that the Manta Diablo will have the pearl back and Ramon’s life with it. When Ramon went back to the village, everyone was talking about the pearl. Ramon showed it to his father, who gave it to the Madonna.
Bad things did happen in the village. The Salazar fleet was gone and Ramon’s father died. Everyone had thought the Madonna will protect Ramon’s father, for he had given the great present, but because of this, Ramon started to believe the pearl brought bad luck and stole it.
The Sevillano, a cruel crew of the fleet, made Ramon go with him to the City of Guaymas to sell the great pearl. Unfortunately, the Manta Diablo was following them. The Sevillano tried to kill the Manta, but he sank together with it while he was killing it.
I think the Sevillano is really bad and it is rather good that the Sevillano died. This book is a good but strange story because the overall content was exciting, but the ending felt like it was over forcing and not clear.
