Hi. I’m Greene. Recently I read a book called The City of Ember. It’s about an underground city called Ember having shortages of so much things that they find a way to escape.
The citizens of Ember get assigned different jobs when they turn twelve. Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow get the jobs Pipeworks laborer and messenger. They were both very upset with the jobs they got. Lina and Doon decided to trade.
One day, Lina’s grandma found a beautiful metal box with a document inside. Lina was interested in the metal box, which was finely made, but had a couple of dents on it. The document had the most perfect handwriting you could ever imagine. It was the writing of the Builders, the people the citizens of Ember believed to be their founders. But before Lina got the document, Poppy, Lina’s little sister had got to it first and chewed it up into pieces and made it illegible to read. Lina knew that it had to be something important and decided to figure out what it meant. Lina got the help of her friends Clary and Doon and found out that it was the instructions to egress.
Meanwhile, the citizens of Ember were getting shortages of everything. And the mayor started smuggling all the food, just for his own good. When Lina and Doon found out about this, the mayor told all the citizens that they were spreading vicious lies.
They ran away to where the exit is with Poppy. The exit was riding a boat on the river. They were really scared, but they ended up doing it. The outside world was beautiful. Doon and Lina decided to send a message to the citizens of Ember about the outside world. The citizens of Ember get the messages, and they probably escape, too.
After I read this book, I thought that it would be strange to live in such a place. I also think that I would have figured out what the document meant as soon as I saw it. And I wouldn’t have made such a foolish mistake to persuade people that the mayor wasn’t really a good person This book was very funny and interesting. I hope the sequel of this book, The People of Sparks is as good as The City of Ember.
