Many people see self driving cars as a great future invention that could revolutionise driving. However, many people worry what would happen one failed to work properly. This worry came true when just two days earlier, a self-driving car hit a person who was biking in the night and killed the biker. This was the first person to be killed by a self-driving car. Because of this incident, I thought about whether self-driving cars should be trusted.
According to CNN, the crash on wednesday was highly because of the failure of the self-driving car’s program. The self-driving car had failed to notice the woman that was camly walking her bike. Because of this little incident, a lot of the self-driving car testing was immediately stopped. However, in this case; who is responsible for the incident. Is the car’s company responsible, or is the driver inside the car who was not paying attention responsible, or is the pedestrian who illegally crossed a road when it was the red light responsible? This incident has also made me think about whether self-driving cars are a great future invention that could avoid a lot of injuries, or is it a potentially dangerous weapon that could be hacked into doing a lot of damage. Not only that there are errors, there is also the vulnerability of cars being hacked. If a terrorist can hack into self-driving cars, then the situation might look something like this. Everything is looking normal when suddenly, all of the cars in the street suddenly slam into each other and just crash into everything until every car is destroyed. However, although there might be some possible harms, still, self driving cars can save tons of lives by preventing traffic accidents.
Now since I have told you what had happened and the harms and benefits of self-driving cars, this brings us to another question. “If the driver was a human, could this accident have been prevented?” This is the video of the crash. http://money.cnn.com/2018/03/22/news/companies/uber-video-death-self-driving/index.html
