Hi, I'm Greene. I have read a book called The Witches. This book is about real witches. A seven-year-old British boy stays with his Norwegian grandmamma after his parents die in a car accident. His grandmamma, by the way, is a retired witchophile, a person who studies and knows a lot about witches. She also told her grandson how to spot a witch and other stories about witches.
According to his father’s will, they had to live in their house in England. As they were getting ready to go to England, the boy’s grandmamma got pneumonia. So they had to go to Hotel Magnificent because it had lots of fresh air and a beach.
The boy took his pet mice, Mary and William to the hotel. Mr. Stringer, the manager of the hotel, found out about his pet mice, and he wasn’t allowed to play with them anymore. So the boy decided to go find an empty room with nobody inside. He found an empty ballroom with nobody inside. It was reserved for a meeting for the annual meeting of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The boy decided that the meeting was already over, or even if it wasn’t, they probably wouldn’t be mad at him. He decided to hide behind some folding screens, just in case. As he was playing with his pet mice, he saw a bunch of ladies walking inside.
Then the boy realized that they weren’t ladies. They were witches! He thought about escaping out the back door, but there wasn’t one. The witches had chained and bolted all the other doors. So the boy decided to stay there as quiet as possible. They began talking about a new way to get rid of children. The Grand High Witch herself was there. She was here to tell all the other witches of England the best way to wipe out all the children. The witches of England were to buy the best sweet shops of England. She had made a magical formula, known as the FORMULA 86 DELAYED ACTION MOUSE-MAKER, which was going to turn the children into mice. The Grand High Witch let in Bruno, another guest of the hotel, and gave him some chocolate with her formula inside. Bruno turned into a mouse and ran away. After the Grand High Witch had finished telling them about how to make her new formula, the meeting was about to end.
The boy was caught in the last second and was forced down the Mouse Maker. He turned into a mouse too, and he ran away. He also found Bruno, and went to his grandmamma. With his grandmamma’s help, he returned Bruno to his parents and stole the Mouse Maker. With the Mouse Maker, he turned all the witches into mice.
They decided that England was too dangerous and returned to Norway. They became witchophiles and lived happily ever after.
As I read this book, I thought that if I was hiding behind the screens, I would have gone to Mr. Stringer right away. Then I wouldn’t have gotten myself involved in this. I also decided to watch out for witches, just in case it was true. This book was exciting, but I prefer books with very happy or partly happy endings, and nobody getting turned into mice, unless they are the villains in the story.
