My Opinion About Unification

Updated: Oct 2, 2021

Unification is an important topic because South and North Korea are still at war even following the Korean War (1950-1953). Unification is the process of one or group of nations being united together. Unifying the two Koreas’ will put the two nations under one government and end the long war. Some people say that being unified will cause much economic harm since the South and North Korea’s government systems are very different. However, unification will improve Korea’s army, citizens’ safety, and also promote the country’s international standing. Unification enhances South Korea’s army by providing more advanced weapons, such as nuclear bombs. Citizens would be in a safer environment since North Korea will not be a threat to us. Other countries will also get interested in Korean technology, which will boost Korea as a leading nation.

A positive aspect about unification is that Korea’s army will improve. North Korea has weapons related to nuclear products, other bombs and dangerous weapons and restricted areas. which South Korea does not have. For example, during the Korean War, South Korea could survive because of the United States and other countries supporting it. Yet since the war, North Korea has been inventing weapons that South Korea is unable to. This is because South Korea promised the United States that it would not. However, when it unites with North Korea, South Korea will be able to enjoy the weapons that North Korea offers. In addition to new weapons, the two countries can cooperate because South Korea has better technology and North Korea has more natural resources. South Korea can help by applying advanced IT (information technology) to develop the army’s access to the internet. North Korea has various natural resources including those that help construct electric batteries, which are essential for powering the army.

Currently, citizens of South Korea are not in a safe environment, a good economy and our relationship with other countries are bad. Battles may occur between the two Koreas, since they still have not finished the long war. For example, South Korea needs to be alert and ready, since the North Korean army can invade at any time. North Korea, for example, tests missiles to warn South Korea that they could go into war. If the two Koreas participate/engage in war, many people will die. For instance, 5 million citizens died during the Korean War. Therefore, a war would be a lose-lose situation. In addition, unification would make other countries less likely to look down upon Korea. They will consider Korea as a developed country because unified Korea will have more advanced technology and a stronger army as aforementioned. Overall, citizens--including separated families who desire a family union--will be safer.
