Whether online courses are helpful for students is a hot topic these days, since the majority of students rely on their computers for school work. Online classes are carried out by different platforms including Zoom, Google Hangouts, and Skype. Some people say that online classes are effective, since there are buttons to raise the hand and show reactions on Zoom. Furthermore, teachers could save time because they do not need a separate role call since the names are available on screen. However, online schooling has several negative effects because it harms children’s health, it deters students’ attention in class and is not effective for students who do not have a good environment to study in. Children face health risks because by sitting in their chairs for long periods of time, they have a high chance of getting the straight neck syndrome. Also, some students could watch Youtube, or message their friends(privately) during class. Additionally, some students will have a bad environment to study in, with various distractions including irritating noises.
A negative aspect about online schooling is that it is bad for student’s health. Nowadays, students need to stare at their computers, on average, 6 hours per day, which is a considerable amount of time. According to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA), the number of patients with straight neck syndrome increased from 606 in 2011 to 1,134 in 2015. The majority of the patients were students who are occupied with computer work. In addition to the straight neck syndrome, students suffer from bad eyesight and dry eyes from staring at the computer for long periods of time. Computer screens expose students to harmful blue-light rays which not only damage their eyesight, but also disrupt their normal sleep patterns.
Online classes also provide students with various modes of distraction. For example, more than half of the students were found clicking on other online applications during class. In addition, it was found that half of elementary school students used other digital devices during online school periods. The temptation of the game icon or Youtube button is so strong that students watch other channels and not listen to their teachers properly. This is a very serious problem because students are unable to properly digest their class materials. Therefore, students learn better when they are at school in person because the teachers are able to physically monitor them and their activities in class.
This was my opinion about online classes. Online classes are very very bad.
