A lot of people might think that There is only 1 type of resin, and if there are different types, they are very similiar. However, these thoughts are wrong.They are very different in terms of cure time, safety,cost, and their pros and cons along with it. I will explain 2 types of resin, that are among the main 4 types.
Starting off with polyester Resin, it cures in minutes to hours, and the cost is quite low, or middle-ranged. It can be dangerous, and has a very noxious smell. To use this, you have to wear a respirator, a hood, and work in a well ventilated area. It cures very hard, so, if you want to make a smooth surface, you can sand it or buff it. You can also fix scratched areas, and pieces can be bonded with more resin, if you want a larger piece. However, it does tend to yellow with time, and is not UV light resistant. It also tends to break if it hits a hard surface, because, as I mentioned above, it does cure very hard.
The next is epoxy resin. The curikng time is hours to days, though you might be able to tgake it out of the mold sooner. The cost is middle to upper range< and gets more expensive< depending on the clearness of the final result. It is quite safe, but you should still wear gloves and improve the ventilation. It is widely available, and you can use it for practically anything. It is especially used by people who are new to resin. Unfortunately, it cannot be buffed or4 shined, and you have to finish it with another layer of resin, or a resin sealer spray to get a glossy finish.
I personally like epoxy resin better, because it is all purpose,it's safe, and it's much easier to use.
