This week Wednesday was the Korean Alphabet day. It is the day that King Sejong proclaimed Hangeul, the Korean alphabet. In South Korea, it is on October 9 but in North Korea, it is on January 15 in North Korea. The date is different because South Korea's Korean Alphabet day is the day when King Sejong distributed the Korean alphabet, but in North Korea, they use the day when King Sejong made the Korean alphabet as Hangeul day. I am going to introduce a few facts about the Korean language. 1. The Korean alphabet was made only by King Sejong. Many people think that King Sejong made Hangeul with scholars. But neither the scholars nor smart people helped King Sejong make the Korean alphabet. King Sejong made the alphabet by himself and then the scholars checked it. Not a lot of people know this fact. A lot of people think that King Sejong made the Korean alphabet with other people because making a new alphabet is a very hard and complicating thing to do. 2. The Korean language is isolate. Korean is a language isolate, which means that it shows no significant link to any other existing language in the world. Korean is the largest language isolate in the world. 3. The Korean language is heavily influenced by the Chinese. As said at the beginning, Korean is a language isolate, but due to the historical connections between the Chinese and Korean, about 60% of the Korean words are of Chinese origin. Either Korean or English is both good, so we should keep learning those two languages.
